The CLAT Exam 2024

CLAT, which stands for the Common Law Admission Test, is a national-level entrance exam conducted for admission to undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law programs offered by 22 National Law Universities (NLUs) in India. The exam is organized by the Consortium of National Law Universities, which is composed of representative universities. Additionally, several affiliated universities and organizations also utilize the CLAT exam for admissions and recruitment purposes.

Until 2018, the responsibility of conducting CLAT was rotated among the NLUs. However, starting from 2019, the exam is conducted by a permanent body known as the “Consortium of NLUs,” which was established by the NLUs. The headquarters of this consortium is located at NLSIU Bangalore.

For the academic year 2023-2024, all admissions to the 5-year integrated LL.B and LL.M. programs will be conducted through CLAT 2023.

CLAT EXam Date2024

The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) has recently declared that the CLAT 2024 examination will be conducted on December 3, 2023, in offline mode. The official announcement regarding the CLAT 2024 exam date and admission notification was made on May 23, 2023, through the consortium’s official website – consortiumofnlus.ac.in. Additional information regarding CLAT 2024 will be made available soon. The application form for CLAT 2024 is expected to open in the first week of August.

The CLAT Exam Registration

The CLAT 2024 registration process will commence in the last week of July or the first week of August 2023, conducted by the Consortium of NLUs. Candidates will soon be able to access the CLAT 2024 application form through the official website of the NLU Consortium – consortiumofnlus.ac.in. Eligible candidates who wish to take the CLAT 2024 exam can register online and fill out the application form on the official website – consortiumofnlus.ac.in – until the last date of CLAT 2024 registration.

Registered candidates who have completed the CLAT 2024 application fee payment will be able to update their test centre preferences until the second week of November 2023 (tentative).

CLAT Application Fee 2024: During the CLAT 2024 registration process, candidates are required to pay the CLAT application fee. The application fee for CLAT 2024 will be Rs. 4,000 for general applicants and Rs. 3,500 for SC and ST candidates.

The CLAT Exam Syllabus

English Language:

  • 450-word passage based on contemporary or historically significant fiction and non-fiction writing
  • 5-6 questions testing comprehension and language skills
  • Reading and comprehending main points, arguments, and viewpoints in the passage
  • Drawing inferences and conclusions, summarizing, comparing and contrasting arguments or viewpoints
  • Understanding the meaning of words and phrases used in the passage

Current Affairs & General Knowledge:

  • 450-word passage based on news, journalistic sources, current affairs, and general knowledge

Legal Reasoning:

  • 450-word passage involving legal matters, public policy questions, or moral philosophical inquiry
  • Identifying and inferring rules and principles in the passage
  • Applying rules and principles to various fact situations
  • Understanding how changes to laws or principles may alter their application to different fact situations

Logical Reasoning:

  • Series of short passages (about 300 words each)
  • Recognizing arguments, premises, and conclusions
  • Reading and identifying arguments in the passage
  • Critically analyzing patterns of reasoning and assessing the effectiveness of arguments
  • Inferring from the passage, applying inferences to new situations, drawing relationships, and identifying contradictions or equivalences

Quantitative Techniques:

  • Short sets of facts or propositions, graphs, or other textual, pictorial, or diagrammatic representations
  • Deriving, inferring, and manipulating numerical information from passages, graphs, or other representations
  • Applying 10th-standard mathematical operations such as ratios and proportions, introductory algebra, measurement, and statistical estimation.

The CLAT Exam Pattern

The CLAT 2024 exam will be conducted in pen and paper mode, and the question paper for the UG course will be available only in English. The CLAT 2024 UG exam will have a duration of 2 hours, consisting of 120 multiple-choice questions. Each question carries one mark, and there is a negative marking of 1/4th of a point for each incorrect answer.
